Tips On How To Stop Sleep Apnea
It can be very scary to think that you might stop breathing in your sleep. As a matter of fact, this happens to many people and when it occurs at least five times an hour it is known as sleep apnea. A mild case may arise when you have a respiratory infection or you might have a chronic case.
There are two reasons you may stop breathing in your sleep. One is because of a lack of respiratory effort or because of an obstruction in the airway. Whichever type you have, the result is the same and you find yourself snoring loudly, sleeping poorly and feeling sleepy during the day.
It is important to be aware of the symptoms of this breathing disorder so that you can stop sleep apnea as soon as possible. Unfortunately over time it can cause serious problems including high blood pressure, diabetes and in increased incidence of heart attack or failure.
Some of the simplest ways to work toward stopping sleep apnea is to make lifestyle changes. Obesity and smoking are two risk factors, so losing weight and quitting smoking are good ways to get started. Avoiding muscles relaxants also allow your muscles to work better on breathing during the night.
Another good way to stop sleep apnea is to sleep on your side, as this is the best position to prevent obstruction of your airway. There are special pillows or shirts you can buy that have a special shape that make you sleep on your side, allowing for clearer passageways. Also, sleeping at a 30 degree elevation is very helpful.
There are also some more clinical ways to deal with the problem. Some breathing machines stop sleep apnea by providing continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) that keeps the airway open and allows you to breathe properly. A BiPAP is a stronger version of this type of machine. Where the CPAP works during inhalation, the BiPAP works when you inhale and exhale.
These machines are worn with a mask or tubes over the mouth and nose (or just the nose) while sleeping at night and allow for a steady flow of oxygen. The BiPAP even records how many breaths you take and adjusts accordingly.
In some situations the best solution is surgery. This is the most expensive option, but it can prove effective to stop sleep apnea. In this kind of surgery the muscles and other structures in the airway are tightened and adjusted to prevent obstruction.
There are many things you can do to stop sleep apnea and get the kind of rest your body needs at night. First of all, though, see your doctor for a diagnosis, and then get straight to work solving the problem so you can feel better and avoid some of the more severe potential side effects.
